Captive Breeding Conservation for Red Panda and Snow Leopard, Topkeydara ( off display)

One of the objectives of PNHZP is the conservation breeding of two important species viz, Red Panda and Snow Leopard. In order to achieve this goal, a conservation breeding centre was established on five hectares of land in Topkeydara under Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary at 3rd mile, Darjeeling by enhancing the ex-situ facilities for the two species. It was inaugurated on 08.10.2013 by the Honourable Minister in Charge (Forest) Shri. Hiten Barman along with North Bengal Development Minister Shri. Gautam Deb.

This facility has 6 Red Panda enclosures and 5 Snow Leopard enclosures (2 open and 3 closed). During the Year 21-22 a new hospital was established for monitoring the health and treatment of the animals housed. A new 2-unit Red Panda enclosure was constructed to house the increasing number of individuals. A new staff barrack was constructed for the animal keepers.

The breeding centre at Topkeydara is currently staffed with 10 staff (7 zoo keepers, 3 night-guards) who are overseen by the Estate Officer, PNHZP. The breeding facility is not open for display to visitors.
