Captive Breeding Conservation for Herbivores and Pheasants, Dowhill (off display)

PNHZP is a leading zoo in Conservation Breeding of high altitude herbivores & pheasants. A conservation breeding centre was established at Dowhill for taking care of high altitude herbivores (Viz, Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan Goral, Blue Sheep etc ), high altitude indigenous pheasants (viz. Red Jungle Fowl, Temminck's Tragopan, Kalij Pheasant, Cheer Pheasant, Himalayan Monal), exotic pheasants (viz, Golden Pheasant, Lady Amherst's, Silver Pheasant, Reeves Pheasant) also successfully breed at this centre. This facility is located in a 5.93 hectare of forest land under Kurseong Forest Division was established on 07.12.2011. The conservation breeding centre has one 7-unit pheasantry (27 enclosures), one 2-unit pheasantry (10 enclosures), one aviary with 4 enclosures, and 15 herbivore enclosures. A hospital with a full-time compounder is also a part of this facility and the veterinary doctor frequently visits for regular check-ups of the animals. In the Year 21-22 the hospital was further upgraded with an operation theatre and doctor's chamber.

A new 6-unit aviary is being constructed housing for 6 indigenous species. In the past years, the park lost a good number of fertile eggs that were not incubated or hatched by the pheasants. Considering this loss, the institute procured 4 fully automatic incubators which resulted in an increase in the number of hatched chicks adding to the population of the pheasants at CBC, Dowhill. With the growing number of chicks, the existing rearing house proved insufficient for housing them therefore extension of the chick rearing facility was taken up at Dowhill.
